Have you ever wondered what your day would be like if you attended one of DMA’s Tax Seminar Series? On Thursday, June 4, 2015, I attended the State and Local Tax Seminar in Chicago. The presenters for the day were Jon Bowman, Sean Evans, Kevin Koller, Mark Ledoux, Mark Miller, Katherine Parrish, and Chad Roberson. They all came with an energy that was contagious the minute I walked in the room, and maintained that high energy until the end of the seminar. I was surrounded by 65+ people: 75% were regular attendees, 20% were new to a DMA event, and 5% were DMA employees working the event in some capacity.

The day started around 8:15 a.m. with breakfast and networking and the seminar began promptly at 9:00 a.m. Sean Evans kicked off the seminar with a quick tax overview on nationwide issues and trends occurring on the state and local side. His graphs and quick statistics were a highlight at my table and set the bar for the rest of the day (I highly recommend reviewing them, if you haven’t already).

Chad Roberson kicked off the specific states portion of the seminar, speaking on the Southeastern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and North/South Carolina). We then continued on with Mark Ledoux covering our Northeastern states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, and New Jersey). I would like to write more on the trends, statistics, and legislation they dove into but then this would turn into a 35 page paper, which is not appealing to me or you. "WOW" is an understatement at how much they packed in to the morning, while still maintaining high participation from the audience. The audience was highly engaged with our presenters, which was great because it put a bullet point into action, making it more relatable to how the new tax regulation worked. Before I knew it, it was time for lunch.

Lunch included more networking and questions to be answered on an individual basis. This was one of my favorite parts of the entire day because I was introduced to Dee Creviston with Supreme Industries. Dee had a way of making me, as a new DMA professional, understand how important our Tax Seminar Series are to everyone – DMA client or not. I was surprised to learn Dee was not familiar with our sales/use tax services. She knew us as property taxes, because we’ve been providing property tax services to Supreme Industries for the last couple of years. I’d be doing an injustice if I didn’t tell you the best line from Dee was, "I’ve attended two-day sales/use tax events in New York, and this event today was the most informative and beneficial event to-date. And I’ve been working with taxes for the last 14 years!" I could not have been more proud to be a DMA professional and know I was surrounded by some of the best tax professionals in the industry.

After lunch we dove into Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio with Jon Bowman, Western Great Lakes states with Mark Miller, Texas with Kevin Koller, and the Western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington) with Katherine Parrish.

No questions went unanswered, and questions asked that stumped our DMA team were answered with "here’s my business card, email me the question(s) and I’ll find the answer for you when I get back into the office."

After finishing up the day I was convinced our DMA team had sold everyone at the seminar on the DMA Way – striving to be an extension of your tax department. If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of our series, I highly recommend it. The knowledge and wisdom passed on to attendees is priceless!
