Completely Compliance - Hawaii Tax System Modernization Program

by DMA Staff | Jan 31, 2017

In an effort to update their ability to administer taxes, Hawaii has been implementing their Tax Modernization Program. This program is expected to be completed by 2020, with multiple rollouts along the way for all tax types. Most recently, they had a rollout for the General Excise Tax (GE), including new account numbers and a website to report and pay those returns. Beginning January 1, 2017, one will no longer be able to file General Excise Tax via the website. All GE returns will need to be filed on the new system Hawaii Tax Online. Other tax types, however, may still be filed on the old system. Updates to be completed over the coming years will encompass updating software and hardware, management and business processes, customer service abilities, and documentation process. With all these changes, Hawaii is expecting to create a better experience for processing requests and protection against fraud.
